Viewing property in China without a visa: the 240-hour transit rule

FangScout News · October 31, 2026

US citizens are among the nationalities that can stay in China for up to 240 hours (10 days) without a visa when transiting to a third country, which can be enough for a focused viewing trip.

According to China Briefing's guide to the policy (last updated November 4, 2025):

  • Citizens of 55 countries, including the United States and Canada, are eligible.
  • You need a passport valid for more than three months and a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, not back to where you came from.
  • The policy covers 65 ports across 24 provinces. Changsha Huanghua International Airport is included, with the stay area covering Hunan province.
  • The stay limit was extended to 240 hours on December 17, 2024.

Rules and port lists change. Check with your airline and the Chinese embassy or consulate before you book.

What it means if you're abroad: A US–China–third-country itinerary (for example, flying on to Hong Kong, Japan or Korea) can give you up to 10 days on the ground to view homes in Hunan without a visa. Our sister brand ChinaWithEase plans viewing trips; book a Property Check first to shortlist homes before you fly.
